What is Unique and what does it actually do?

Unique uses a probability-based metric to highlight the discussions that appear more frequently in your filtered data compared to the rest of your dataset. When we say 'filtered data', we simply mean the part of your data you have chosen to focus on. This could be anything from a certain region, an age group, or even a particular product. In simple terms, Unique helps you spot what's genuinely different or distinctive about your chosen data segment.

For example, let's say you filter to feedback from customers aged 18-25. If this age group are consistently talking about an issue that isn't being mentioned much elsewhere, Unique will flag that, giving you a clear picture of what matters most to that age group.

So, why is this useful?

While volume and sentiment based analysis are useful, Unique adds a crucial layer of context. It's like a data detective, it tells you whether a theme is particularly relevant to your filtered dataset, or just common across the board.

It makes it easier to:

  • Prioritise issues that are specific to certain groups
  • Compare feedback across brands, timeframes, or customer segments
  • Focus your attention on the themes that matter most right now

Where can you find Unique?

You can use Unique in Trending and Deep Dive. We'll take a look at unique in action in Deep Dive. For this example we're looking at a pet shop's Trustpilot reviews. What are their detractors really saying?

Curious to learn more about Deep Dive? Head over to our knowledge base article for all the details, linked here 💡

Step 1: Head to Deep Dive and use a star rating framework to take a look at 1 star reviews.

Step 2: Once 1 is selected, the themes, topics, and verbatim update to only show 1 star reviews.

In themes, the top volume theme is delivery timescales, but what is the most unique?

Step 3: To find the most unique, use the bar at the bottom to scroll across and press Unique until it shows you the most Unique first.

Step 4: Now we can see that the most Unique theme is brand trust, mentioned in 30% of verbatim comments within 1 star reviews.

In contrast, within the whole data set, brand trust is mentioned in only 7% of data! It's clear that brand trust is much more common in the negative 1 star reviews.

When should you use Unique?

Use Unique when you want to:

  • Compare different customer segments
  • Understand what is distinctive about specific groups
  • Prioritise issues that affect particular audiences
  • Move beyond surface level stats
